A top Democratic Senator just told a POLITICO podcast that Congress obtained “extraordinarily important new documents” late last year in a massive data dump that they’re still analyzing.
Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) has been outspoken as the Vice Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee which is conducting a relatively bipartisan investigation into Russia’s attacks on American democracy, alongside Intel Committee Chairman Burr (R-NC).
Warner’s comments about the new trove of Trump Russia collusion evidence follows Twitter’s subdued mea culpa for allowing Russian Twitter bots to make up 4% of Trump’s retweets during the general election, reaching more than 600,000 Americans. He told Politico:
Warner, the intel committee’s top Democrat, says “end-of-the-year document dumps” produced “very significant” revelations that “opened a lot of new questions” that Senate investigators are now looking into, meaning the inquiry into Trump and the Russia hacking—already nearly a year old—will not be finished for months longer.
“We’ve had new information that raises more questions,” Warner says in the interview, an extensive briefing on the state of the Senate’s Trump-Russia probe for The Global Politico, our weekly podcast on world affairs.
Partisan Republicans in the House Intel committee have been trying to shut down the investigation into election meddling. The GOP’s stonewall efforts are crescendoing this week, led by Chairman Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) and his team of Congressional spinmasters. Unlike the House panel, Warner’s role on the Senate Intel Committee as a Vice Chair – rather than a weaker “ranking member” who cannot run the show in the Chair’s absence – has limited the partisan shenanigans from its members to a negligible level.
Florida Men Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and Ron DeSantis (R-FL) are major Fox News conspiracy theorists along with Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), the trio of which have spent a considerable amount of time manufacturing conspiracy theories from literally any interesting sounding turn of phrase without any basis in fact.
Republicans have whipped up a storm of bogus ideas, in contrast to Senator Warner’s plainspoken assessment of the Trump Russia investigation based upon his deep access to classified materials, as told to Politico:
“Mueller is getting closer and closer to the truth,” Warner tells me, and “closer and closer to the truth is getting closer and closer to the president.”
Senator Mark Warner became a telecommunications multi-millionaire after graduating Harvard law school, then becoming Governor of Virginia and eventually succeeding former GOP Senator John Warner – who endorsed the Democrat across the aisle. His serious background belies a seriousness of purpose in defending America’s democracy from surreptitious and illegal interference from any foreign government.
That’s why Warner’s grave warning today should send chills down the spine of every person in the White House, and Trump’s former campaign and transition staffers, and his family.
