Haitians outside of Trump Tower just got the best revenge on Trump

- Januari 21, 2018

Haitians in New York have been there long enough to have picked up the city’s notoriously aggressive, often pugnacious, attitude, at least as far as reacting to President Trump’s comments about their country is concerned.

According to an article in The New York Daily News, a group of Haitian immigrants marched from the Brooklyn Bridge to trump tower on Friday to deplore the President’s reference to the Caribbean nation as a “shithole.”

Picking up marchers as they paraded through Manhattan, the protestors waved Haitian flags as they danced to a coterie of drummers and horn players.

One protestor, Marie Timothee, a 28-year-old Haitian-born social worker raised in Brooklyn, told the Daily News that:

“We have a President in power who knows no history and seems to have no education, who just disrespects any and everybody in the world.”

While President Trump would prefer to have immigrants from primarily caucasian countries like Norway, where any sensible resident would stay put due to that country’s far superior social services and healthcare programs, nearly 700,000 Haitian immigrants now live in the U.S., constituting less than two percent of our nation’s foreign-born population and making Haiti the fourth largest contributor of immigrants from the Carribean, after Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica. 70% of the Haitian population in America live in just two states, Florida and New York, where they’ve formed thriving communities, with 58% of Haitians in the U.S. already naturalized as American citizens.

One of the Haitians participating in the New York march was Reverend Sully Guillaume-Sam, a 49-year-old priest at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Bushwick, Brooklyn. He perfectly expressed the reasons that he and his fellow countrymen and women were marching in protest at President Trump’s loathsome remarks.

“I am here with my fellow Haitians, and also our fellow Africans, to tell Trump he’s wrong the way he thinks about us. We bring a lot to this country, and he needs to be fair to us. He needs to be a leader with heart, not the kind of racist leader he has been showing us he is.”

Perhaps if President Trump spent more time listening to citizens of Haitian descent instead of white supremacists and alt-right Nazis, America could regain the respect of the host of nations alienated by our President’s coarse language and racist sentiments. With Trump’s “America First” philosophy, however, it’s completely obvious that Trump doesn’t give a “shithole” about what other countries think of us.
