Joe Scarborough just called out ‘complicit’ Republicans in brutal new op-ed

- Januari 27, 2018

Members of the Republican Party have stepped up their efforts in recent weeks to distract, deflect, and outright derail Robert Mueller’s investigation to determine if the Trump campaign colluded with Russian intelligence to undermine the 2016 presidential election and tip the scales in his favor.

Mueller also appears to be investigating whether or not the White House has engaged in a campaign to obstruct justice, a campaign GOP lawmakers appear to be not only unbothered by, but increasingly complicit in.

Former Republican congressman and current MSNBC host Joe Scarborough has had enough.  He penned a scathing opinion piece in the Washington Post Saturday attacking his former party’s embarrassing silence and humiliating maneuvering to undermine the public’s trust in the FBI.

“In more settled times,” the host of MSNBC’s ‘Morning Joe’ begins, “this kind of presidential assault on an independent investigation would have stirred grave concerns throughout the halls of Congress. But Trump’s corrupted coalition has instead trotted out one twisted conspiracy theory after another, all designed to distract the president’s most fevered fans and concoct a case against Mueller’s investigation.”

Scarborough was just getting started.  He quickly pivoted to specific accusations of his Republican brethren, challenging their silence and even defense of the most sordid actions by this president, and each other.

“In the Age of Trump, it is no longer in vogue to stand athwart history in defense of American institutions, constitutional norms and cultural traditions,” he writes. “These days, Republicans’ intellectual firepower is rather focused on defending Stalinist attacks on the press and pricey payoffs to porn stars.”

Later in the piece, Scarborough zeroed in on the news this week that President Trump ordered special counsel Mueller fired in June of 2017, but ultimately decided not to follow through with the order when White House Chief Counsel Don McGahn threatened to resign – an act of courage and conscience utterly absent in elected Republicans.

“Imagine that,” he writes.  “Beneath the blizzard of news headlines pounding ceaselessly at our nerves, this week we discovered a Republican loyalist willing to sacrifice his political standing over a higher principle.”

“McGahn’s stand contrasts greatly with Capitol Hill conservatives who do little more than occasionally tweet a veiled critique of the president or deliver a meaningless speech from the Senate floor,” he lambastes.
