Senator Lindsey Graham’s tumultuous relationship with President Trump just took another turn for the worse today after the Republican from South Carolina appeared on ABC’s This Week and gave his opinion on the latest developments in the Mueller investigation. (Video below.)
Graham and Trump have had a rocky relationship since the presidential campaign where the Senator was an early, if ultimately unsuccessful, hopeful and Trump was attacking everyone else in the field. Their relationship grew closer after the election when Trump needed Graham’s support in the failed attempt to repeal Obamacare.
The immigration debate has strained their ties, however, since the Senator refused to lie on Trump’s behalf after his infamous “shithole” comments when Graham was presenting a carefully negotiated compromise solution with his Democratic counterparts to the impasse on the issue.
Perhaps Trump will regret alienating the Senator yet again, now that he’s responding to questions about the reports that the President tried to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller last summer by saying:
“I don’t know if the story is true or not, but I know this: Mueller should look at it,” as the Senator told ABC.
“Don McGahn, if the story is true in The New York Times, did the right thing, and the good news is the president listened,” Graham continued.
“The investigation needs to go forward without political interference, and I’m sure it will,” he said. “As a matter of fact, I think Mr. Mueller is the perfect guy to get to the bottom of all this, and he will.”
It was Senator Graham’s last comment that could be the one that disturbs Trump the most in that one could interpret it as a helpful warning… or a veiled threat.
“I see no evidence President Trump wants to fire Mr. Mueller now,” Graham said. “I don’t know what happened last year, but it’s pretty clear to me that everybody in the White House knows it would be the end of President Trump’s presidency if he fired Mr. Mueller.”
With Graham professing full confidence in Robert Mueller to the point of supporting legislation to prevent the President from firing him and opposing the administration’s immigration hard-liners, it’s going to be a while before Trump invites Graham golfing again. Senator Lindsey Graham is probably fine with that.
