On the same day that Andrew McCabe stepped down as Deputy Director of the FBI, NBC News revealed that Trump had also posed a decidedly uncouth question to his wife.
After Trump fired then-FBI Director James Comey last May, the President reportedly grew furious that the ousted government employee used a government-funded plane to fly back from Los Angeles – where he learned of his firing on the television – to Washington, D.C.
Trump then called McCabe, who became the FBI’s acting director, to fume about why he was using a government-funded plane even after his ouster. Per three people familiar with the call, “McCabe told the president he hadn’t been asked to authorize Comey’s flight, but if anyone had asked, he would have approved it.”
Per NBC News:
The president was silent for a moment and then turned on McCabe, suggesting he ask his wife how it feels to be a loser — an apparent reference to a failed campaign for state office in Virginia that McCabe’s wife made in 2015.
McCabe, for his part, replied, “Okay, sir.” Trump then hung up.
In 2015, McCabe’s wife ran for office in Virginia as a Democrat and accepted $500,000 in donations from the Clinton-linked super PAC of former Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe. Her bid was unsuccessful, falling just over 2,000 votes short.
Trump, since learning of this, has been outspokenly wary of McCabe, even going so far as to ask him for whom he voted in the 2016 election.
Trump should spend less time obstructing justice and more time governing. Perhaps then his approval rating wouldn’t be at the lowest point of any president in modern history. Of course, the will of the American people have never been the priority of the kleptocrat in office.
