Trump’s lawyers are having to do some backtracking, cleaning up after the President after he made some ill advised comments last week.
Just before taking off for Davos, Trump said he was “looking forward” to speaking with Special Counsel Mueller and his team as part of the investigation into Russian interference with the 2016 election and possible obstruction of justice.
Shortly thereafter, John Dowd, one of Trump’s lawyers, said that it would be up to his legal team to decide whether or not the President would be speaking with Mueller.
Now, Trump’s lawyers are walking back both statements. The legal team argues that Mueller hasn’t met the high bar for proving there’s need for him to interview the President.
The legal team argues that Mueller would only be able to sit down with Trump if he could prove that there was information that he could only get from the President himself.
They said that the President should not be treated like just anyone else called in for an interview with the Special Counsel.
Mueller has delivered a list of questions to Trump’s legal team, a good indication that the Special Counsel is seeking an interview with the President.
For the most part, Trump has deemed the investigation a “witch hunt,” and even considered firing Mueller from his position last June, according to an explosive report by The New York Times last week.
He dismissed FBI Director James Comey last May, just as this investigation was gearing up. That necessitated the hiring of Mueller in the first place. FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe stepped down yesterday, just a month shy of his planned retirement date, after facing incredible pressure and criticism from the White House.
The investigation has been inching ever closer to the President himself, as Mueller has brought charges against members of his inner circle and campaign, including Michael Flynn, Paul Manafort, Rick Gates, and George Papadopoulos. News broke over the last few days that Mueller have even interviewed attorney general Jeff Sessions, who recused himself from the Russia investigation early on.
With Trump’s legal team flip flopping like this and failing to nail down consistent messaging with their client, it’s starting to look like they can’t take the heat and have to get out of the Russian kitchen. It’s not a good look if they’re trying to convince Mueller they’ve got nothing to hide.
