Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee Devin Nunes (R-CA) has exposed himself in recent weeks to be the quintessential partisan hack, someone who has time and time again chosen to shield President Trump and the larger GOP over serving the American people.
This past week has been dominated by the pending release of the “Nunes memo.” The memo, which is a brief summary of classified information alleging FBI surveillance abuses, has been divorced from the underlying intelligence and as such is said to be deeply decontextualized.
It appears to be nothing more than a cynical attempt to undermine the FBI in the hopes of delegitimizing special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
The FBI has already stated that they only had a “limited opportunity” to review the memo and even then only the day right before the Republicans in the House Intelligence Committee voted to release it against the wishes of the Democrats, while at the same time refusing to let the Democratic response refuting the memo’s contentions be released. The FBI has “grave concerns about material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memo’s accuracy.”
Now, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) have called for Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI) to immediately remove Nunes from his role as Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. Pelosi sent a letter to Ryan and then tweeted about it, calling out Nunes for “deliberately dishonest actions.”
.@DevinNunes’ deliberately dishonest actions make him unfit to serve as Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. @SpeakerRyan must immediately remove him from this position. #RemoveNunes https://t.co/RPehm3Rvib

Schumer sent his own letter, which was shared on Twitter by MSNBC’s Kyle Griffin. The Senate Minority Leader condemns Nunes for “cherry-picking” information to construct a “conspiracy-themed” memo.

While it’s unlikely that Ryan will do the right thing and actually dismiss Nunes from his current role, the Democrats are right to call for it. Now, they’re on the record demanding it and Ryan will be on the record refusing to do so. Ryan and Nunes are tied now, and will sink together.
