While Trump continues to push the absurd idea that the key to ending the gun violence epidemic gripping American schools is to add more firearms to the equation by arming teachers, incidents that directly refute the viability of his proposal continue to pour in.
Trump is so desperate to do the bidding of the NRA and gun fetishists that rather than tackling the problem head-on, he’s chosen to pursue a course of action that will inevitably lead to disaster. To say nothing of the fact that teachers shouldn’t be saddled with the responsibility of serving as both police officers and educators, it’s only a matter of time before accident or malice ends in tragedy.
Earlier today, a police officer stationed at a Washington middle school accidentally fired his gun inside the school. Luckily, no one was injured. The officer has been placed on leave and is now under investigation, reports The Hill.
The incident occurred around 9 AM at George Washington Middle School. The five-year veteran of the resource department accidentally discharged his gun inside his office for a reason yet unknown. He promptly informed the school’s officials of his mistake.
That is to say, even someone experienced with firearms and extensively trained in their use isn’t immune to making a mistake with a loaded weapon. The incident reveals how dangerous Trump’s idea to strap guns to teachers’ hips is. Flooding classrooms with guns will do nothing but skyrocket the likelihood of shootings on campuses across the country.
It’s also worth pointing out that there is no legitimate basis for the president’s claim that arming teachers will serve as a deterrent and scare off mass shooters, especially given the fact that many of these horrific events end with the murderer committing suicide. Clearly, most of them aren’t very concerned about getting hurt.
The only real way forward is to pass stricter gun control laws. There is no reason why a civilian needs a powerful weapon of war like the AR-15, the gun which has quickly become the preference for these mass murderers. Universal background checks would also help. We need a president who is willing and able to push measures like these to prevent the needless deaths of more children. Instead, we’re saddled with a puppet for the NRA.
