Florida Republican just said thoughts and prayers are “only thing” to stop shootings (WATCH)

- Maret 04, 2018

Just before the Florida Senate voted against an assault weapons ban in a baffling turn of events following the February mass shooting in that state, one of its own Republican senators gave an even more mind-boggling speech to her colleagues.

Senator Kelli Stargel took the floor to utter a stream of true nonsense, in a speech advocating against gun control, against an assault weapons ban, and against local municipalities’ ability to regulate guns within their borders.

Her logic was truly mind numbing.

“If I thought for one moment that if we banned assault weapons, that all of these tragedies would end, you would have me. I would be with you. But are we going to ban fertilizer, which is what they used in the Oklahoma bombing? Are we going to ban pressure cookers, which is what they used in the Boston massacre? Are we going to ban the multiple handguns that were used in other assaults? Are we going to ban the sawed off shotguns which was used in Columbine?” she asked.

You can watch this stream of idiocy here.

Her logic isn’t exactly airtight. Fertilizer and pressure cookers primarily serve other functions than just killing. Guns, not so much. Unless you’re Ted Cruz, I guess.

OK, so I guess if your family’s only way of feeding itself is cooking bacon on the barrel of an AR-15, which was the weapon used to kill 17 students and faculty at the high school in Parkland, FL on Valentine’s Day, then yes. The argument holds.

Stargel argued that “thoughts and prayers” were the only effective method for stopping these mass shootings. Because it’s not access to guns that causes the problem, but “inner evil.” Which seems like a local colloquialism for mental illness, poverty, hunger, abusive parents, or some other form of structural violence.

After Stargel gave her ludicrous speech, the Senate voted down the assault weapons ban, taking yet another giant step backwards in the fight against gun violence.
