President Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron spoke to the press today, with the former using it as just the latest opportunity for him to attack the free press. Trump accused a reporter of asking a “stupid question.”
The question, over whether or not the president is considering a pardon for his lawyer Michael Cohen, was certainly not stupid given the fact that FBI recently raided Cohen’s office in Trump Tower. Trump’s irritated response shows that he is feeling the heat as the investigation into his and his cronies’ misdeeds closes in around him.
Macron, for his part, managed to not look too uncomfortable by his counterpart’s rude behavior, choosing instead to smile through the ordeal as one might when a small child who doesn’t know any better misbehaves. Unfortunately, the rude comment to the reporter wasn’t even the most notable moment during the photo op.
At one point, after bragging about their great relationship, Trump pointed out dandruff on Macron’s suit and then proceeded to brush it off. While he tried to play it off as a friendly, familiar gesture, it must be viewed through his past behavior with world leaders and diplomats.
Trump likes to fancy himself an alpha male and delights in abusing and embarrassing those around him. He’s well-known for his extremely tight handshakes, a practice that is supposed to make him appear dominant but really just makes him look weak and insecure.
One can’t easily dismiss the idea that Trump pointing out, then brushing off, Macron’s dandruff was an attempt to embarrass him, put him momentarily off balance, and make Trump look like the dominant personality in the room. It was a cheap trick and shows what a petty little soul our president is. He tried to make Macron look small, but he ended up just making America look small.
