Yesterday, President Trump flew down to Texas ostensibly to offer his support and condolences to the families of the victims of the Sante Fe school shooting in which 10 people were killed and 13 were wounded.
Trump botched the entire effort before even boarding his plane by telling journalists that the trip — during which, it must be repeated, he was slated to meet with the parents of children murdered in cold blood by a man wielding the very guns that Trump refuses to take action against — was going to be “fun.” The incredibly callous remark was another stark reminder that our president is completely incapable of empathy.

Perhaps not surprisingly but no less unfortunately, the trip went as poorly as expected.
The Associated Press reports that Rhonda Hart, who lost her 14-year-old daughter Kimberly Vaughan in the shooting, was disturbed by the president’s visit. She says he kept referring to the mass murderer as “wacky,” a stunningly dismissive, almost comical description of the evil perpetrator. He also kept bringing up the shooter’s trench coat for some reason.
Hart, who is a veteran of the Army, told Trump it might be a good idea to station veterans at schools as a protective measure. “And arm them?” Trump asked, to which Hart replied in the negative. Despite her response, Trump kept bringing up his utterly inane, deeply dangerous idea of giving teachers firearms. It’s a favorite talking point of his because it allows him to shift the conversation away from gun reform legislation and keeps his NRA donors happy.
“It was like talking to a toddler,” Hart said.
The bluntness of Hart’s assessment is startling but seems in keeping with what many who have interacted with Trump have said. The man struggles to string together a coherent thought and often starts rambling without any clue as to where his thoughts will lead him. At moments like this, one can’t help but miss President Obama, who would have certainly offered articulate, genuinely compassionate words to these families in need.
