President Trump stunned the world and the nation this afternoon when he casually threatened to withdraw the United States from the World Trade Organization in a new interview with Bloomberg‘s editor-in-chief, John Micklethwait.
“If they don’t shape up, I would withdraw from the WTO” said Trump, who has complained in the past about how the U.S. is somehow at a “disadvantage” and has been treated “very badly” even though the United States created the World Trade Organization and our participation in it is critical to the function of the multilateral trade system that we created after the end of the Second World War.
It goes without saying that the withdrawal of the United States from the World Trade Organization would cause economic upheaval and drastically curtail our influence on the global economy — something that the President’s patron in Moscow, Vladimir Putin, would surely celebrate to see.
The move comes as the President is recklessly waging trade wars with our allies and trading partners over what he feels is “unfair” treatment, putting American jobs at risk and forcing the government to spend billions of dollars propping up hurting industries.
Trump went on to say that he isn’t worried about the Mueller investigation because “it’s difficult to impeach a successful president,” which is, of course, utter nonsense. His popularity among the racist far-right of this country might keep his approval rates steady but the rest of the country is chomping at the bit to see him gone and if the Democrats retake the House, there’s nothing stopping them from impeaching him.
If Trump continues to put our economy in such jeopardy, we’ll have no choice to get rid of him as quickly as possible.
